forming priests for the new evangelization
The Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Missionary Seminary of Las Cruces for the formation to the presbyterate for the new evangelization was erected on January 19th, 2025 by His Excellency the Most Reverend Peter Baldacchino, Bishop of the Diocese of Las Cruces. The canonical and legal see of the seminary is located at 2190 Snow Rd, Las Cruces, NM, 88005.
The Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Missionary seminaries are a fruit of the Second Vatican Council and an inspiration of St. John Paul II. The first Redemptoris Mater Seminary was opened in Rome in 1987 by St. John Paul II. Today there are 120 Redemptoris Mater Seminaries around the world, with 10 serving different dioceses in the U.S.A: Newark, NJ. Washington DC, Philadelphia, PA. Denver, CO. Boston, MA. Dallas, TX. Bridgeport, CT. Miami, FL. Brooklyn, NY. and now Las Cruces, NM.
The Redemptoris Mater seminaries are diocesan seminaries therefore they belong to the Bishop. They are also missionary and international in character. The seminarians come from different countries, both as a concrete sign of the missionary character and of their readiness to be sent anywhere in the world. Once the seminarians are ordained presbyters, they serve the Church locally and in missionary outposts answering the call of the Second Vatican Council for the need of a better distribution of the clergy. They are governed according to the present norms for the formation and incardination of the diocesan clergy. Yet the most significant aspect of these Seminaries lies in their relationship to the Neocatechumenal Way, an itinerary of Catholic formation which awakens vocations in many young people before they enter the seminary, it accompanies them during their time of formation and once ordained as presbyters it continues to sustain them in their permanent formation.
